Foot Patrol and Positive Community Contacts

The Nogales Police Department takes great pride in keeping close contact with the community we serve. We do this by ensuring to walk the residential and commercial areas in our city aside from conventional patrol methods. NPD Officers conduct foot patrols and other activities within our community that not only show we care to be engaged but also gives NPD and the community great opportunity to build and keep a trusting relationship.

A philosophy that is fostered at NPD is that the most effective way of policing the community is to be actively involved, genuinely care to help, and maintain open lines of communication with those we serve. NPD strives to do this in day-to-day operations by being present at community events, supporting local businesses, schools, and clubs that help to improve our community. NPD also aims to continue doing its part with programs such as those described below.

D.A.R.E (Drug Abuse Resistance Education)

D.A.R.E. was founded in 1983 and has proven so successful that it is now implemented in 75 percent of the nation’s school district and in more than 43 countries around the world. D.A.R.E. is a police officer-led series of classroom lessons that teaches children from kindergarten through 12th grade how to resist peer pressure and live productive drug and violence-free lives. This year, millions of school children around the world will benefit from D.A.R.E and get the skills they need to avoid involvement in drugs, gangs, and violence.

Officer Luis Andrade proudly provides D.A.R.E services to the community and local schools in Nogales. For more information, please contact Officer Andrade.

Coffee with a Cop

Coffee with A Cop was launched in Hawthorne, California in 2011, as a result of a brainstorming session. Members of the Hawthorne Police Department were looking for ways to interact more successfully with the citizens they served each day.

Community policing has long been considered a framework for establishing trust between the community and the police. However, over time the character and composition of our nation’s communities have changed due to shifting demographics, more commuters, and the introduction of different communication methods such as websites and social media.

In less than five years, Coffee with a Cop event has been hosted in more than 3000 communities, in all 50 states and is one of the most successful community-oriented policing programs across the country. The program has also expanded to outside the United States to Canada, Europe, Australia, and Africa.

The Nogales Police Department is the first agency to bring this program to our community, and we certainly aim to continue having this close contact with the public we serve. The key to Coffee with a Cop’s growing success is that it opens the door for interactions outside of the crisis situations that typically bring law enforcement officers and community members together. Look at our local advertisements and follow us on social media for the next Coffee with a Cop event. Hope to see you there!
